Details and Provenance

History Salvaged is proud to offer our George Washington Nouveau Twist Ballpoint pen made from the last remaining tree planted on Fauquier Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia , by George Washington.

This George Washington Nouveau Twist is part of a Limited Collection created from Witness Wood® that Fredericksburg, VA, claims as one of America’s most historic trees. It was a Horse-Chestnut and the last of thirteen which George Washington planted to shade the walk between his mother’s cottage and Kenmore, his sister’s home. He named these trees after the thirteen colonies, which was a fashion at that time. Alexander Hamilton did the same at his home just outside of New York, and there were others.

In 2004, at the age of 216, this last Horse Chestnut needed to be taken down after 78 years of trying to preserve it.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Washington served as a general and commander-in-chief of the colonial armies during the American Revolution, and later became the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He died on December 14, 1799, in Mount Vernon, Virginia.
