    Details and Provenance

This George Washington Rollerball is created from Witness Wood® acquired by a local Virginia arborist from the home of our 1st President: Mount Vernon®. The Witness Wood® used in the George Washington Pen comes from a Scarlet Oak tree that was felled on the estate during a 2009 storm.

While there was no way to determine exactly which year this tree started life due to the trunk being hollow and the remaining base wood rotten, another oak tree that grows within one hundred feet of it was dated to the year 1783 by a core sample from the Oxford Dendrochronology Laboratory, Oxfordshire, UK. Dean Norton, director of grounds and gardens, states that this Scarlet Oak tree is most likely older due to the fact that the diameter at breast height was four to five inches larger than the tree that still grows there today.

History of the Wood: This 150-year-old tree had to be removed from the site of George Washington’s whiskey distillery, which stood behind his grist mill at his home, Mount Vernon®. When archaeologists uncovered the original foundation of the distillery, this magnificent walnut tree had grown within the long-since abandoned foundation. Subsequently, Mount Vernon® has since rebuilt the distillery and is now making and selling whiskey using Washington’s recipe to produce small batches for the first time in over 200 years.

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. Washington served as a general and commander-in-chief of the colonial armies during the American Revolution, and later became the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He died on December 14, 1799, in Mount Vernon, Virginia.

George Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon® began as a one-and-one-half-story farmhouse built in 1735 by his father, Augustine, and received its well-known name during the ownership of his half-brother Lawrence. George acquired Mount Vernon® in 1754, over the next 45 years slowly enlarged the dwelling to create the resplendent 21-room residence we see today. Washington personally supervised each renovation; advising on design, construction, and decoration—even during the Revolutionary War. Conscious that the world was watching, Washington selected architectural features that expressed his growing status as a Virginia gentleman planter and ultimately as the leader of a fledgling democratic nation.
